RMT - Justice for London Underground cleaners |

RMT Tube cleaners working for private contractors on the London Underground are engaged in a campaign of industrial action for a living wage of at least £7.20 an hour. The RMT is also demanding: 28 days' holiday, sick pay, decent pensions and travel facilities, and an end to the practice of 'third-party sackings' in which cleaners can be dismissed, with no disciplinaryhearing or right of appeal - a device used to get rid of union activists.
RMT cleaners (majority of whom are women) have voted by a massive 99+% for strikes, with a very creditable turnout of 40%.There will be a 24-hour strike starting with the night shifts on Thursday 26 June, and a 48-hour strike starting with night shifts on Tuesday 1 July.
People often forget that the main cause of the gender pay gap, is that women often are trapped into low paid labour, which also means that they will have lower pensions and struggle with expensive childcare. The reality of gender inequality in this country is that women are more likely to live in poverty or be forced to rely economically on a (usually male) partner. The unionisation of vulnerable workers is a crucial step towards fighting viscous exploitation and slashing the gender pay gap.
As socialist and feminists, we should stand in solidarity with our sisters in stuggle!

Cleaners on the London Underground will be taking industrial from 6pm tomorrow (Thursday 26th June) in their campaign for a London living wage. Some cleaners are on pay rates of little more than £5.50 and are demanding a living wage of £7.20 per hour.
John McDonnell MP, LRC Chair, said:
"It is a disgrace that poverty wages are being paid to workers facing substantial increases in their living costs, and who provide an essential service for Londoners. This level of exploitation of vulnerable workers is barbaric in a so-called civilised society.
"Some of the managers and shareholders of the companies employing these workers should try living on these wages in our capital city."
Jeremy Corbyn MP said:
"We won the 'London Living Wage' under Ken Livingstone to end poverty pay on the London Underground. Where is Boris Johnson on this issue?"
